The mixture of virtual reality and real world is possible by two different ways:
In the first technic the real world is recorded by a camera and the virtual image augmented by a computer and the combined video signal can be projected to the users eyes by a HMD. The second technic uses an optical beamsplitting element to combine the real and virtual world in front of the users eyes. To see the augmented virtual objcts oriented to the real world while moving the HMD a tracking system is needed. In a video-see-through HMD this can be done with the built-in camera. In optical-see-through systems an optional integrated camera can be used for tracking purpose.
